- INTRODUCTION
-
- This file contains information about the INSTALLATION or SETUP procecure
- for the Windows version of the TCN program.
-
- For general information about the TCN program or Shareware, browse the
- file README.DOC.
-
-
-
- GENERAL
-
- You can install the TCN Program on your computer in one of three ways:
-
- 1) Use SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE (fully automatic Windows programs)
-
- 2) Use TCNSTALL.BAT (run manually from DOS prompt, self-documenting)
-
- 3) Use individual DOS commands from DOS prompt (see TCNSTALL.BAT)
-
- SETUP.EXE (or TCNSETUP.EXE for those who do not have SETUP.EXE) can be
- used to install the TCN program (set it up) on your computer. Refer to
- "OPERATION OF SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE" for detailed instructions about
- using these programs.
-
- TCNSTALL.BAT results in a slightly different arrangement of TCN program
- files when it is used. For further information, refer to "OPERATION OF
- TCNSTALL.BAT" which is contained in the last 3 paragraphs in this file.
-
- Following "OPERATION OF SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE", additional
- information is presented which may be helpful in those cases where the
- SETUP.EXE procedure does not work. Please try these procedures and
- TCNSTALL.BAT before calling for technical assistance.
-
-
-
- OPERATION OF SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE
-
- 1. Access the Windows Program Manager. (If you're not sure what
- the Program Manager is, start Windows on your machine. The
- Program Manager is usually the first screen to appear when
- Windows starts.)
-
- 2. Click on the File menu at the upper left hand corner of the
- Program Manager window. (The menu appears.)
-
- 3. Click on the Run option (7th option down, just above Exit Windows
- option) of the File menu. (The dialog box for the Run option appears.
- If you know how to type drive and path information for the SETUP.EXE
- program, you can do that and skip to step 9.)
-
- 4. Click the Browse button (at right side, 3rd button down) in the Run
- option dialog box. (The Browse dialog box appears.)
-
- 5. Click on the Drives: box at lower left of the Browse dialog box.
- A menu pops down below the Drives: box. If needed, use the vertical
- scroll bar to scroll the drive icon into view for the drive which
- contains your TCN program setup files. Click on the icon for the
- drive that contains your TCN program files. (The pop down menu
- disappears and the drive letter and volume name of the indicated
- drive appears in the Drives: box.)
-
- 6. Click the Directories: scroll box (above the Drives: box) to indicate
- which directory contains your TCN program setup files. (The
- name of the directory you indicated is displayed above the
- Directories: scroll box.)
-
- NOTE: If you do not see the name of the directory you know
- contains the TCN program files, you can click the root
- directory icon (always displayed at the top of the
- Directories: scroll box) and work down to the known directory
- from there.
-
- 7. When you have found and identified the appropriate directory in step
- 6, the program name SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE should appear in
- the File Name: scroll box below the File Name: box which is to
- the left of the Directories: box. If needed, scroll through
- the File Name: scroll box using the vertical scroll bar until
- you see the program name SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE. Click on
- the program name SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE. (The name you indicate
- appears in the File Name: box just below the File Name: title.)
-
- 8. Click the Browse dialog box Ok button (top button at right side)
- The Browse dialog box disappears and the Run option dialog box
- appears with the indicated drive, path, and file name from steps
- 5 - 7 repeated in the Command Line: box.
-
- 9. Click the Ok button (top button at right) in the Run option dialog
- box.
-
- If you indicated SETUP.EXE in step 7, the message
- "Initializing Setup" appears. If you indicated TCNSETUP.EXE in
- step 7, that message does NOT appear.
-
- You may or may not be prompted for the drive and path containing
- TCN program files. If you are, type drive letter, colon and
- backslash if files are in the root directory. Follow that by
- complete path information if files are not in the root directory,
- in which case, a trailing backslash is not needed.
-
- The TCN Program Dedication Screen will appear. View it and move
- on by pressing a key or clicking the mouse. You can access it
- from within the TCN program.
-
- You WILL be then prompted for a destination directory.
-
-
- 10. When you are prompted for a target install directory, C:\USA is
- offered as a default. You can click Ok to accept the default or you
- can specify any valid path on a drive with sufficient space to hold
- the TCN program files. Click Ok in the Target drive and directory
- dialog box when the desired target drive and path are correctly
- indicated.
-
- After you click ok, your hard drive is checked for adequate space.
- If insufficient space exists on your hard drive, you are advised and
- the setup process is automatically terminated. You must clear some
- space on your hard drive or start over and indicate a different
- target drive in step 10.
-
- If a copy of the TCN program exists on the path you specify, you are
- notified by a prompt. You can create an icon and exit without installing
- the program files, you can create an icon and install the program files,
- or you can exit without installing either.
-
- If your target drive has enough space, the Windows screen will
- disappear momentarily. This is normal. When it reappears, a SFX
- file will be running.
-
- When the Windows screen reappears, you are advised if the TCN
- program installed successfully.
-
- TCNbP Company provides limited technical support for installation
- problems. Contact your shareware disk vendor, your CD-ROM supplier
- (or the manufacturer), or your BBS Sysop for technical support or
- warranty replacements. Please try the following steps or
- TCNSTALL.BAT before calling anyone for technical support.
-
-
-
-
- IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM
-
- If the setup process does not complete successfully, refer to the
- following information to see if you got a complete file set. You
- might need to unzip VBRUN300.*** (extension may vary depending on
- method of compression) and copy the resulting VBRUN300.DLL into your
- WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Or, you may need to obtain the zipped file.
- If you got your TCN program copy from a BBS, look for VBRUN300.ZIP or
- VBRUN300.*** on the BBS. If your copy of the TCN program files came
- from a CD-ROM, look on it for a likely file. Either place should
- have a source of instructions about unzipping and installing the
- file VBRUN300.DLL.
-
- You can search for VBRUN300.*** on your hard drive or CD-ROM using the
- Search facility of the Windows File Manager program. A procedure
- to do that is included in this file.
-
-
-
- VALID TCN PROGRAM FILE SETS
-
- To accommodate shareware distribution using various media (diskettes,
- BBS, CD-ROM), the TCN program can be distributed in three different
- file sets. The complete file set distributed by TCNbP Company contains
- the following files:
-
- SETUP EXE 15,312 04-28-93 12:00a
- VER DL_ 9,008 03-10-92 3:10a
- SETUPKIT DL_ 3,657 04-28-93 12:00a
- VBRUN300 DL_ 276,684 05-12-93 12:00a
- TCNSETUP EX_ 15,529 03-20-96 9:23p
- README DOC 29,378 03-20-96 10:01p
- SETUP LST 51 07-10-94 11:49a
- TCN34WIN EX_ 250,950 03-20-96 10:45p
- SETUP DOC 14,865 03-20-96 10:02p
- TCNSTALL BAT 6,647 03-01-96 5:11p
- WTP BMP
- WTP TCN
-
- NOTE: The provided file sizes, dates, and times are approximate.
-
-
-
- This file set can be abbreviated in two ways. The first way is:
-
- VER DLL 9,008 03-10-92 3:10a
- SETUPKIT DLL 7,008 04-28-93 12:00a
- TCNSETUP EXE 30,225 03-20-96 9:23p
- README DOC 29,378 03-20-96 10:01p
- TCN34WIN EX_ 250,950 03-20-96 10:45p
- SETUP DOC 14,865 03-20-96 10:02p
- TCNSTALL BAT 6,647 03-01-96 5:11p
- WTP BMP
- WTP TCN
-
-
- The second way this file set can be abbreviated is:
-
- VER DLL 9,008 03-10-92 3:10a
- SETUPKIT DLL 7,008 04-28-93 12:00a
- VBRUN300 DLL 398,416 05-12-93 12:00a
- TCNSETUP EXE 30,225 03-20-96 9:23p
- README DOC 29,378 03-20-96 10:01p
- TCN34WIN EX_ 250,950 03-20-96 10:45p
- SETUP DOC 14,865 03-20-96 10:02p
- TCNSTALL BAT 6,647 03-01-96 5:11p
- WTP BMP
- WTP TCN
-
- If you have the second file set, look for a compressed version of
- VBRUN300.DLL. It will probably have an extension like .ZIP, .EX_,
- .EXE, .ARC or something like that. If the extension is .ZIP, try
- using PKUNZIP to decompress it. If the extension is EXE, type
- VBRUN300 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM to decompress it. If the extension is
- EX_, use the DOS EXPAND command to decompress it. Refer to appropriate
- helps or documentation as required to decompress VBRUN300.***.
-
- If you have the 3rd file set, copy all three .DLL files to the
- WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and try TCNSETUP again.
-
- If that does not work, try contacting your vendor.
-
- If that does not work, order a viable copy of the TCN program directly
- from TCNbP Company, P.O. Box 516, OLLA, LA 71465 USA. Cost is $10.00
- and that amount applies toward registration if you register. Also,
- you receive both a DOS version and a Windows version of the TCN program.
-
- From CD-ROM
-
- If your trial copy of the TCN program is on a CD-ROM, follow the
- manufacturer's instructions with the CD-ROM program launcher. Contact
- your supplier or the manufacturer for technical support. Refer to
- OPERATION OF SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE in a prior paragraph for a
- description of what is supposed to happen while the TCN program is
- installed.
-
-
- From BBS download files
-
- If the TCN program download file is 500 K in size (typical, could be
- as low as 375K), it probably includes VBRUN300.DL_. If the TCN
- program download file is 250K or less (typical, could be up to 325 K),
- it probably does NOT include VBRUN300.DL_.
-
- If your download file includes VBRUN300.DL_, run SETUP.EXE from the
- "Run" option of the "File" menu of the Windows Program Manger.
-
- If your download file does NOT include VBRUN300.DL_, make sure you
- have a copy of VBRUN300.DLL in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory before
- attempting installation.
-
-
-
- SEARCHING FOR VBRUN300.*** ON YOUR HARD DRIVE OR CD-ROM
-
- NOTE: The TCN program requires that VBRUN300.DLL be in the
- WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. TCNSETUP can operate with VBRUN300.DLL
- in the same directory with TCNSETUP. Hence, if TCNSETUP ran ok but
- the TCN program won't start, first check the floppy copy with the TCN
- program files on it or the directory where you unzipped BBS download
- files for the file VBRUN300.DLL. If it is there, copy it to the
- WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and ignore the rest of this procedure.
-
- To determine whether you have VBRUN300.DLL or a zipped file that
- contains it, you can use the search feature of the Windows File Manager
- (icon looks like a file cabinet).
-
- The search feature is activated by clicking on the "Search" option
- (12th option down, 2 above Exit option at bottom) of the "File" menu
- (icon at top left) of the Windows File Manager.
-
- Type VBRUN*.* in the "Search For:" box.
-
- Click "Search all subdirectories" box so that an "X" appears in it.
-
- Type a \ (backslash) in the "Start search from" box.
-
- Click ok.
-
- If you get a message "No matching entries found", your search key is not
- on the drive you indicated.
-
- Repeat search for another logical hard drive until you find VBRUN300.***
- or you have searched all logical hard drives.
-
- If your search key is on a drive, a box will appear with each occurrence
- of the search key listed by drive and path. You can use the drive and
- path information to locate VBRUN300.***
-
- If you locate VBRUN300.DLL somewhere other than in WINDOWS\SYSTEM, copy
- it to WINDOWS\SYSTEM. If you do not find VBRUN300.DLL on your hard
- drive or CD-ROM, obtain a copy of it and copy (decompress if necessary)
- it into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.
-
- After you know you have VBRUN300.DLL, unzip the TCN program download
- file and run TCNSETUP.EXE from the "Run" option of the "File" menu of
- the Windows Program Manger.
-
- Refer to OPERATION OF SETUP.EXE or TCNSETUP.EXE in a prior paragraph
- for a description of what is supposed to happen while the TCN program
- is installed.
-
-
-
- OPERATION OF TCNSTALL.BAT
-
- TCNSTALL.BAT can be run with no options to display its documentation.
- You can doubleclick on its icon from Windows File Manager. Or you can
- exit to DOS, make the drive where TCNSTALL.BAT is located current, and
- then make the directory where it is located current. After that, type
- TCNSTALL and press ENTER.
-
- FYI, TCNSTALL places VBRUN300.DLL, TCNSETUP.EXE, and the TCN program
- files in the same target directory. This is as opposed to SETUP.EXE
- which puts TCNSETUP.EXE in the WINDOWS directory, VBRUN300.DLL in the
- WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and the TCN program files in the install
- directory you specify.
-
- After using TCNSTALL to install the TCN program, you can start the TCN
- program from Windows File Manager by double clicking on the TCN.EXE icon
- in the target directory you specified. Or you can use TCNSETUP.EXE to
- create the icon. When TCNSETUP.EXE prompts you for the install directory,
- specify the same path you used as the option for TCNSTALL.BAT. When
- TCNSETUP.EXE detects the TCN program already installed there, it will
- offer you the option of "Create Icon Only?" Click yes.
-
